Short History of the Department
HISTORY OF INSTITUTE OF DIABETOLOGY
Dr. Sam.G.P.Moses- Founder Prof.V.Seshiah-First professor
The development of Diabetology as a separate speciality in Tamilnadu could be traced back to the 1940s. It took roots in Madras Medical College in the year 1946, when Late Lt.Col. K.P.G. Menon and Late Dr. Sam.G.P.Moses started an independent Diabetic Clinic at Government General Hospital in 1950. It was upgraded as a Department with 12 beds in 1970. A chair in Diabetology was created in 1978 and Prof.V.Seshiah became the first ever Professor of Diabetology in the Country. In 1979, the bed strength of the Department was increased to 30 (thirty) by the Government of Tamil Nadu. First of its kind in entire India, a separate fulltime Two years “Post-Graduate Diploma in Diabetology course” was started in the year 1985 affiliated to Madras University . Subsequently, the course was affiliated with The Tamilnadu DR.MGR Medical University and it is the only diabetology course in the entire Nation to have the recognition of the Medical Council of India. In March 2009 the diabetology department of Madras Medical College achieved yet another milestone of being upgraded as Institute of Diabetology.
