HISTORY OF DEPARTMENT
The ENT department of the government general hospital, Chennai is functioning for over half a century, initially it was a subdivision of general surgery department. In those days patients suffering from ear, nose & throat conditions were seen in small dark room under the staircase in the main general hospital building. A doctor of the rank of sub-Assistant Surgeon, Dr. Parthasarthy was in-charge. Although he had no special training in E.N.T. Diseases, discharging ears were cleaned and sore throat were painted with mandl’s paint, these was the treatment in the beginning of the department.
Later, the department was shifted to a small building in front of Govt. General Hospital containing two rooms under the charge of one Dr. S. Luther who had some training in E.N.T in England. One Col. Hirsch, I.M.S who was on the staff of the General Hospital also used to do some ENT work this building with his own private instruments which were later sold to the General hospital. About the year 1925, it was decided to send somebody for specialized training in ear, Nose and throat diseases.Dr. Cherian was sent abroad on study leave for specialization in E.N.T.
From 1925 to 1927 Dr. Benzamin and Dr. Santhanakrishna Pillai of Radiology Department looked after the Ear, Nose, and Throat Clinic.
Since 1927, Dr. Cherian took over charge of a special indent was then put in for all the equipment and within a few months time, these arrived from England and then the department was adequately equipped for the needs of that time, although the accommodation was limited. With the instillation of these new OPD , outpatients increases to 100/day. Today it increases to about 350 to 500/day.
Since 50 years there are special developments and modernization in this specialty which made startling discoveries such as an operation for the deafness or removal of voice box for cancer of the larynx or removal of the foreign body or diagnosing a tumor or stopping bleeding from the deeper most part of the lung and oesophagus .Later on the development in electronics lead to the methods of testing and diagnosing ailment of most depressing diseases like deafness and dizziness and the ever increasing sounds in the ear. All these needed special tests which can be done by specialized instruments housed in at least moderately small sound proof rooms. All these were lacking in this department till 1957.
Vigorous efforts were made to acquire audiometers, sound proof rooms and operating microscope. And since then by the strenuous efforts of the departmental staff some of the important instruments and apparatus were acquired. But all that needed space. Finally somewhere in 1967, when the dental department was shifted to a new building, the E.N.T. department slowly shifted on to a part of the space vacated by the Dental wing. Now this housed all the sections of the Audiology, Experimental micro-surgery, and rooms for checking dizzy patients are also lodged.
This department was started in 1940 and DLO in 1950 , MS in 1952 upgraded as institute of otorhinolaryngology on 1972.Now it has attained the status of upgraded institute of otorhinolaryngology in 1979, institute of speech and hearing was started and headed by dr.P.V.Rajendra kumar with one medical audiologist and one clinical tutor.laser surgery instruments and fiber optic endoscopic instruments were purchased in 1987.M.S(ENT) and DLO post graduates courses are being offered.the college of speech and hearing started in 2010 with intake of speech language pathology and audiology course.
