Short History of the Department

The Department of General Medicine was started as a separate unit in 1930 headed by the famous Physician, Professor                                     Dr. M.R.Gurusamy Mudaliar.  It took nearly 60 years for this department to be upgraded to the status of  an Institute.  The first Director and Professor of Medicine of the Institute was Professor G. Ananthasubramaniam. For the past 80     years this Institute has been served and guided by various eminent personalities and doyens in the field of medicine. Presently the  department is functioning in the Tower Block I wherein all the general medical wards are located.  In Tower Block II, the emergency medical ward is functioning round the clock to tackle all the admissions including emergencies. In the first floor of Tower Block II, the critical care wards viz. Medical Intensive care unit and Toxicology wards are functioning round the clock.
